The History of Sporting Kansas City Soccer at Children’s Mercy Park
With the MLS Soccer Season underway, the Sporting Kansas City are ready for action! The Kansas City squad have been playing at Children’s Mercy Park (Kansas City, KS) since 2011. Speaking of Children’s Mercy Park, the venue is located very close to Legends Park (home of Independent Baseball’s Kansas City Monarchs) and the Kansas Speedway (home of NASCAR races). The stadium is about a 25-30 minute drive from Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium (home of the MLB’s Royals and NFL’s Chiefs-respectively). Children’s Mercy Park is also about a 15-20 minute drive from Downtown Kansas City, Missouri (home of the Negro League Baseball Museum).
Since the Sporting Kansas City became an MLS franchise in 1996, the team won two MLS Cup championships in 2000 and 2013. In addition, they earned the Supporter’s Shield in 2000 for best record in the league. Sporting Kansas City was previously known as the Kansas City Wizards from 1996 until 2010. Children’s Mercy Park was formerly known as Sporting Park (2013-2015) and Livestrong Sporting Park (2011-2013).
