Who Are the Norwich Sea Unicorns? What League Do They Play in?
With the Independent Season underway, the Norwich Sea Unicorns are ready to play ball! The Sea Unicorns are an independent affiliate of the Future Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL). In fact, they are one of the couple professional baseball clubs that currently play in Connecticut: Hartford Yard Goats, New Britain Bees, Mystic Schooners, Bristol Blues & Danbury Westerners.
The team, who rebranded in 2020, was formerly known as the Connecticut Tigers from 2010 until 2019. Also, they collaborated with the Detroit Tigers as their Class-A Short farm franchise. Connecticut’s mascot, C.T. the Tiger, is a member of the Mascot Hall of Fame located in Indiana. However, Norwich’s partnership with Detroit ended as part of the MLB’s Minor League reorganization plan at the end of 2020.

The Sea Unicorns have been playing their home games at Dodd Memorial Stadium since 2010. Speaking of Dodd Memorial Stadium, the 6,000-capacity facility is located in the Eastern Connecticut city of Norwich. The venue is about a 15-20 minute drive from Mohegan Sun Arena (home of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun). In fact, the stadium is about a 45-50 minute drive from Hartford (home of the Double-A Baseball’s Hartford Yard Goats). Dodd Memorial Stadium was named after former U.S. Senator and Norwich native Thomas J. Dodd. The team has not been sporting a physical mascot since its rebrand in 2020.
