The History of Stanford Basketball at Maples Pavilion
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Cardinal are ready for tip-off! The men in red have been playing at Maples Pavilion since the late-1960’s. Speaking of Maples Pavilion, the venue can hold more than 7,000 fans in capacity. The Cardinal basketball venue is about a 0.5-hour drive from San Jose (home of the NHL’s Sharks, MLS’ Earthquakes, and Minor League Baseball’s SJ Giants). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus not far from Stanford Stadium (football).
The arena was named in honor of former university donor and alumni Roscoe Maples. In fact, the venue underwent renovations in 2005 that included new restrooms and concourses. For men’s basketball, the Cardinal last took part in the Sweet 16 in 2014. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently won a national championship in 2021. The men’s program took part in the March Madness only once since 2010, while the women’s team made twelve such appearances during that span.
