The History of SDSU Basketball at Viejas Arena
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Aztecs are ready for tip-off! The men in red and black have been playing at Viejas Arena since the late-1990’s. Speaking of Viejas Arena, the venue can hold over 12,000 fans in capacity. The Aztecs basketball venue is about a 15-20 minute drive from Downtown San Diego (home of the MLB’s Padres). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus not far from Tony Gwynn Stadium (baseball).
The arena has a court that is named in honor of longtime men’s basketball coach Steve Fisher (1999-2017). Also, the venue was formerly referred to as Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl from 1997 until 2009. For men’s basketball, the club in red and black last reached the Round of 32 in 2015. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently played in the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The men’s program took part in the March Madness nine times since 2010, while the women’s team only made two such appearances during that span.
