The History of San Jose Earthquakes Soccer at PayPal Park
With the MLS Soccer Season underway, the San Jose Earthquakes are ready for action! The Quakes have been playing at PayPal Park since 2015. Speaking of PayPal Park, the venue was formerly known as Avaya Stadium from 2015 until 2020. The stadium is about a 5-10 minute drive from the SAP Center (home of the NHL’s San Jose Sharks). Providence Park is also about a 5-10 minute drive from Excite Ballpark (home of Minor League Baseball’s San Jose Giants).
Since the San Jose Earthquakes became an MLS franchise in 1996, the team won two MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003. In addition, the Quakes finished with the best record in the league twice by winning the Supporter’s Shield (2005 and 2012). The San Jose franchise is one of three MLS teams based in California along with LA Galaxy and Los Angeles FC.
