Who Are the Saginaw Spirit? What League Do They Play in?

With the Minor League Hockey Season underway, the Saginaw Spirit are ready to drop the puck! The Spirit are an independent affiliate of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In fact, the OHL is one of the three leagues in the Canadian Hockey League along with the Quebec Major Junior League and the Western Hockey League. The Spirit have been playing in the OHL since 2002. Saginaw is one of the three OHL teams based in the United States along with the Flint Firebirds and Erie Otters. Saginaw reached the 2019 Western Conference Finals, but lost to the Guelph Storm in seven games. Since 2006, the Spirit made the OHL Playoffs thirteen times.

Where do the Saginaw Spirit Play their Home Games? Who is the Main Mascot?

The Spirit have been playing their home games at Dow Event Center since 2002. Speaking of Dow Event Center, the 5,500-capacity arena is located in Downtown Saginaw. The venue is also about a 45-minute drive from Flint (home of the OHL’s Flint Firebirds). Dow Event Center was previously known as the Saginaw County Event Center until 2014. The team’s main mascots are Sammy Spirit the Eagle and Burt the Orange Monster.
