The History of Cowboys Basketball at Gallagher-Iba Arena
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the OSU Cowboys are ready for tip-off! The men in orange have been playing at Gallagher-Iba Arena since the late-1930’s. Speaking of Gallagher-Iba Arena, the venue can hold at least 13,000 fans in capacity. The Cowboys basketball venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from Norman (home of the Oklahoma Sooners). The basketball building is also located on the university’s campus adjacent to Boone Pickens Stadium (football).
The arena was named in honor of the school’s two legendary coaches: Ed Gallagher (wrestling: 1916-1940) and Henry Iba (men’s basketball: 1934-1970). Despite the venue’s long age, the building underwent major renovations in the early 2000’s that included new suites and seating areas. For men’s basketball, the Cowboys last advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2005. Meanwhile, the Cowgirls recently played in the Round of 32 in 2018. The men’s program took part in the March Madness six times since 2010, while the women’s team made seven such appearances during that span.
