The History of Pirates Spring Training at LECOM Park

With the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season underway, the Pittsburgh Pirates are ready to play ball! The Buccos have been training at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (or LECOM) Park since 1969. Speaking of LECOM Park, the venue is also the home of the Bradenton Marauders of the Florida State League-Single A (formerly Low-A). Before its current name, the Spring Training site was formerly known as McKechnie Field (named after former Pirates Manager Bill McKechnie who led Pittsburgh to a World Series title in 1925). LECOM Park is a 20-25 minute drive from Ed Smith Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Baltimore Orioles.

Since the Pirates came to the stadium in 1969, the team won a World Series title in 1979 and made the playoffs three times during the 2010s decade. Pittsburgh also reached the NLCS on a couple occasions in the early 1990s. 2013 turned out to be a special year for the Buccos as OF Andrew McCutchen won the NL MVP and Clint Hurdle won the NL Manager of the Year. In 2004, INF Jason Bay earned NL Rookie of the Year honors.
