The History of WSU Cougars Football at Martin Stadium
With the College Football Season around the corner, the Washington State Cougars are ready for kick-off! The men in Crimson and Grey have been playing at Martin Stadium since the early-1970’s. Speaking of Martin Stadium, the venue can hold at least 30,000 fans in attendance. The Cougars’ football venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from Spokane (home of Minor League Baseball’s Spokane Indians). Martin Stadium is also located on the Washington State University campus. The school’s football stadium was named after former Washington Governor Clarence D. Martin (whose son, Dan, donated funds for the stadium’s construction).
Since its opening, the Cougars football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Mike Leach (head coach), QB Ryan Leaf (Heisman Finalist), RB Jerome Harrison, G Cody O’Connell, QB Gardner Minshew, Mike Price (head coach), and many more! The men in Crimson and Grey last won a Conference Title in 2002 (shared). Since 2013, the Cougars have played in six bowl games.
