Russell Westbrook, Former MVP & 9-Time All-Star, Traded to Lakers in 4-Player Deal

Not long before the 2021 NBA Draft was set to begin, it appears that one lucky team received a star player. ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that the Washington Wizards have traded PG Russell Westbrook to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Wizards will receive the following in return from Los Angeles: C Montrezl Harrell, F Kyle Kuzma, SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and the #22 pick in the 2021 Draft (F Isaiah Jackson). However, Jackson was eventually dealt to the Indiana Pacers.

Why Did the Wizards Trade Russell Westbrook?

Washington decided to trade the former MVP due to his pending free agency. Westbrook will hit the market following the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season. Also, the Wizards are adding new pieces to build around Bradley Beal. For instance, Washington fired head coach Scott Brooks after five years and replaced him with ex-Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr. Meanwhile, the Lakers acquired the former MVP to improve the team’s championship chances. Despite winning the NBA Championship in 2020, Los Angeles was knocked out of the 1st round by the Phoenix Suns a year later. With Westbrook in the fold for the Lakers, he will join forces with Los Angeles’ top players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

What Was His Tenure with Washington Like?

Russell Westbrook was traded to the Wizards as part of the deal that sent PG John Wall to the Rockets during the 2020-2021 season. Even though his time with the Wizards was short-lived, he guided Washington to one playoff appearance in 2021. For the 2020-2021 season with the Wizards, he scored 22.2 points per game along with 11.5 rebounds per game and 11.7 assists per game.
