Which NHL Franchises Have Yet to Receive the Vezina Trophy?

As of 2021, only 15 teams have not won the NHL’s Top Goaltender Award: Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, Minnesota Wild, Arizona Coyotes, Vegas Golden Knights, and Seattle Kraken. Also, four of those teams have never finished in the Top 3 in the Vezina Trophy voting process: Ducks, Senators, Golden Knights, and Kraken.

Did the Penguins Get Close from Winning the Vezina Trophy?

Tom Barrasso

  • In 1997-1998, Pittsburgh G Tom Barrasso was a finalist for the NHL’s Vezina Trophy. The goalie compiled a 31-14-13 record with a 0.922 save percentage and a 2.07 goals allowed average. Unfortunately, Barrasso went on to lose the Top Goalie Award to Dominik Hasek of the Buffalo Sabres.
  • In 1992-1993, Barrasso became a finalist for the NHL’s Top Goalie Award. He went 43-14-5 with a 3.01 G.A.A. and a 0.901 save percentage. However, Barrasso finished as a runner-up against Ed Belfour of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Did the Islanders Get Close from Winning the Vezina Trophy?

Kelly Hrudey

  • In 1987-1988, Islanders G Kelly Hrudey finished in the Top 3 in the Vezina voting. He compiled a 22-17-5 record with a 3.34 goals allowed average and an 0.896 save percentage. Unfortunately, Hrudey lost the Vezina Battle to Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton Oilers.

Did the Kings Get Close from Winning the Vezina Trophy?

Jonathan Quick

  • In 2015-2016, Kings G Jonathan Quick became a finalist for the NHL’s Top Goaltender Award. The player went 40-23-5 with a 2.22 G.A.A. and a 0.918 save percentage. However, Quick would go on to lose to Braden Holtby of the Washington Capitals.
  • In 2011-2012, Quick was a finalist for the Vezina Award. The player went 35-21-13 with a 1.95 goals allowed average and a 0.929 save percentage. Unfortunately, Quick finished as a runner-up against Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers).

Did the Sharks Get Close from Winning the Vezina Trophy?

Antti Niemi

  • In 2012-2013, Sharks G Antti Niemi was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy. He went 24-12-6 with a 2.16 G.A.A. and a 0.924 save percentage. Despite the lockout-shortened season, Niemi went on to lose the Top Goalie Battle to Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Evgeni Nabokov

  • In 2007-2008, San Jose G Evgeni Nabokov became a finalist for the NHL’s Top Goaltender Award. He compiled a 46-21-8 record with a 0.910 save percentage and a 2.14 goals allowed average. Unfortunately, Nabokov finished as a runner-up against Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.

Roberto Luongo

  • In 2010-2011, Canucks G Roberto Luongo became a finalist for the Vezina Trophy. He compiled a 38-15-7 record with a 0.928 save percentage and a 2.11 G.A.A. Despite guiding Vancouver to the Stanley Cup Finals that season, Luongo would go on to lose to Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins.
  • In 2006-2007, Luongo was a finalist for the Top Goalie Award. He went 47-22-6 with a 2.28 goals allowed average and a 0.921 save percentage. However, Luongo finished as a runner-up against Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.

Kirk McLean

  • In 1991-1992, Vancouver G Kirk McLean finished in the Top 3 for the Vezina Trophy voting. He compiled a 38-17-9 with a 0.901 save percentage and a 2.74 G.A.A. Unfortunately, McLean ended up being the runner-up against Patrick Roy of the Montreal Canadiens.

  • In 2013-2014, Colorado G Semyon Varlamov became a finalist for the NHL’s Top Goalie Award. The player went 41-14-6 with a 2.41 G.A.A. and 0.927 save percentage. However, Varlamov finished runner-up against Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins.

Patrick Roy

  • In 2001-2002, Avalanche legend Patrick Roy finished in the Top 3 in the Vezina Trophy voting. He compiled a 32-23-8 record with a 1.94 goals allowed average and a 0.925 save percentage. Unfortunately, Roy ended up being the runner-up against Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens.
  • In 1996-1997, Roy was a finalist for the NHL’s Top Goalie Award. He went 38-15-7 with a 0.923 save percentage and a 2.32 G.A.A. However, Roy lost the Vezina Battle  to Dominik Hasek of the Sabres.

  • In 2003-2004, Panther Goalie Roberto Luongo finished in the Top 3 for the NHL’s Top Netnimder Voting. He went 25-33-14 with a 2.43 G.A.A. and a 0.931 save percentage. Unfortunately, Luongo would go on to lose the Top Goalie battle to Brodeur of the Devils.

John Vanbiesbrouck

  • In 1993-1994, Florida G John Vanbiesbrouck was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy. He compiled a 21-25-11 record with a 0.924 save percentage and a 2.53 goals allowed average. Despite being the first Panthers goalie to become a Vezina finalist, Vabiesbrouck finished as a runner-up against Dominik Hasek of the Sabres.

Mike Liut (Hartford Whalers)

  • In 1986-1987, Hartford G Mike Liut finished in the Top 3 for the Hart Trophy Voting. The netminder compiled a 31-22-5 record with an 0.885 save percentage and a 3.23 G.A.A.
