As of 2021, only twelve teams have not won the League MVP Award: Columbus Blue Jackets, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes, Vegas Golden Knights, Calgary Flames, Ottawa Senators (current incarnation), Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes, and Seattle Kraken.

Did the Blue Jackets Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Sergei Bobrovsky

  • In 2016-2017, Columbus Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was a finalist for the NHL’s Hart Trophy. The netminder compiled a 41-17-5 record with a 0.931 save percentage and a 2.06 goals allowed average. Despite winning the Vezina Trophy (NHLs Best Goalie) that season, Bobrovsky went on to lose the MVP Award to Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers.

Did the Stars Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Jamie Benn

  • In 2015-2016, Dallas Left Winger Jamie Benn became a finalist for the League MVP Award. The Player scored 41 goals and 48 assists (89 points). In fact, he was selected to the All-Star Team that season. However, Benn would go on to lose to Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Did the Hurricanes Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Eric Staal

  • In 2005-2006, Carolina Center Eric Staal finished in the Top 4 for the Hart Trophy Voting. He scored 45 goals and 55 assists during the campaign. Despite leading the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup championship that year, Staal went on to lose the MVP Battle to Joe Thornton (Boston Bruins/San Jose Sharks).

Did the Flames Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Jarome Iginla

  • In 2007-2008, Calgary Right Winger Jarome Iginla was a finalist for the NHL’s Top Player Award. The Skater scored 50 goals and 48 assists (98 points), which was the highest points mark of his career. Unfortunately, Iginla went on to lose to Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.
  • In 2003-2004, Iginla became a Hart Trophy finalist. The Right Winger scored 41 goals and 32 assists (73 Points). Despite leading the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals that season, Iginla would go on to lose the MVP battle to Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
  • In 2001-2002, Iginla was a finalist for the NHL MVP Award. He scored 52 goals and 44 assists (96 points) during the campaign. However, Iginla went on to lose to Goalie Jose Theodore of the Montreal Canadiens.

Miikka Kiprusoff

  • In 2005-2006, Flames Goalie Miikka Kiprusoff became a finalist for the Hart Trophy. The netminder compiled a 42-20-11 record with a 0.923 save percentage and a 2.07 goals allowed average. Even though he won the Vezina Trophy that season, Kiprusoff would go on to lose the MVP battle to Joe Thornton (Boston Bruins/San Jose Sharks).

Johnny Gaudreau

  • In 2018-2019, Calgary Left Winger Johnny Gaudreau finished in the Top 4  for the Hart Trophy Voting. He scored 36 goals and 63 assists (99 points) during the campaign. Unfortunately, Gaudreau went on to lose to Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Did the Coyotes Get Close from Winning the MVP Award?

Ilya Bryzgalov

  • In 2009-2010, Coyotes Netminder Ilya Bryzgalov finished in the Top 5 for the NHL’s Top Player Voting. He compiled a 42-20-6 record with a 0.920 save percentage and a 2.29 goals allowed average. Despite a successful season, Bryzgalov would go on to lose to Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.

Sean Burke

  • In 2001-2002, Phoenix Goaltender Sean Burke was in the Top 4 for the Hart Trophy. Burke compiled a 33-21-6 record with a 0.920 save percentage and a 2.29 goals allowed average. However, the Award eventually went to Jose Theodore of the Canadiens.

Did the Panthers Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Pavel Bure

  • In 1999-2000, Florida Right Winger Pavel Bure became a finalist for the NHL’s Top Player Award. The former Rookie of the Year scored 58 goals and 36 assists (94 points) during the campaign. Despite winning the Maurice Richard Trophy (Most Goals in the League) that year, Bure would go on to lose the MVP battle to Chris Pronger of the St. Louis Blues.

Connor Hellebuyck

  • In 2019-2020. Winnipeg Netminder Connor Hellebuyck finished in the Top 6 for the Hart Trophy Voting. The Goalie compiled a 31-21-5 record with a 0.922 save percentage anda 2.57 goals allowed average. However, Hellebuyck went on to lose to Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers.

Did the Senators Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Erik Karlsson

  • In 2016-2017, Ottawa Defenseman Erik Karlsson finished in the Top 5 for the NHL’s Top Player Voting. He scored 17 goals and 54 assists (71 points) during the season. Unfortunately, Karlsson would go on to lose the MVP battle to Connor McDavid of the Oilers.

Did the Predators Get Close from Winning the Hart Trophy?

Pekka Rinne

  • In 2010-2011, Nashville Goalie Pekka Rinne finished in the Top 4 for the Hart Trophy Voting. The netminder compiled a 33-22-9 record with a 0.930 save percentage and a 2.12 goals allowed average. However, Rinne went on to lose to Corey Perry of the Anaheim Ducks.
