As of 2021, only two teams have not won the Manager of the Year Award: Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets.

Did the Brewers Get Close from Winning Manager of the Year?

Craig Counsell

  • In 2018, Milwaukee Skipper Craig Counsell was a finalist for NL Manager of the Year. He guided the Brewers to their first playoff appearance and NL Central Division Title since 2011. However, Counsell would go on to lose to Brian Snitker of the Atlanta Braves.
  • One Year Later, in 2019, Counsell was again a finalist for the Manager of the Year. He led the Brewers to the postseason despite losing Christian Yelich to a late-season injury. Unfortunately, Counsell went on to lose to Mike Shildt of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Ron Roenicke

  • Back in 2011, Brewers Skipper Ron Roenicke was named a finalist for the NL MOY Award. He led Milwaukee to the NL Central Division Title and a playoff berth. However, Roenicke went on to lose to Kirk Gibson of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Did the Mets Get Close from Winning Manager of the Year?

Terry Collins

  • In 2015, New York Skipper Terry Collins became a finalist for the NL Manager of the Year Award. He guided the Mets to their first playoff appearance since 2006 and won the NL East Division Title along the way. However, Collins would go on to lose to Joe Maddon of the Chicago Cubs.

Willie Randolph

  • In 2006, Mets Manager Willie Randolph was a finalist of NL MOY. He led New York to the NL East Division Title as well as a postseason berth. The Mets’ division win snapped the Atlanta Braves’ 14 consecutive years of NL East Dominance. Unfortunately, Randolph went on to lose to Joe Girardi of the Florida Marlins.

Davey Johnson

  • In 1988, New York Skipper Davey Johnson became a finalist for NL Manager of the Year. The Mets won the NL East Division and qualified for the playoffs. However, Johnson would go on to lose to Tommy Lasorda of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
  • Two years earlier, in 1986, Johnson was a finalist for the NL MOY Award. He guided the Mets to the 1986 World Series Championship by beating the Boston Red Sox in seven games. Unfortunately, Johnson would go on to lose to Hal Lanier of the Houston Astros.
