The History of VT Basketball at Cassell Coliseum
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Hokies are ready for tip-off! The men in maroon and burnt orange have been playing at Cassell Coliseum since the early-1960’s. Speaking of Cassell Coliseum, the venue can hold about 10,000 fans in capacity. The Hokies basketball venue is about a 2.0-hour drive from Lynchburg (home of Minor League Baseball’s Lynchburg Hillcats). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus very close to Lane Stadium (football).
The arena has a court that is named in honor of construction supporter and faculty board member Stuart Cassell. In addition, the venue revealed renovation plans in 2021 that included new premium seating as well as remodeled concourses. For men’s basketball, the Hokies last reached the Sweet 16 in 2019. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently played in the Round of 32 in 2021. The men’s program took part in the March Madness five times since 2010, while the women’s team only made two such appearances during that span.
