The History of the Vanderbilt Basketball at Memorial Gymnasium
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Vanderbilt Commodores are ready for tip-off! The men in gold and black have been playing at Memorial Gymnasium since the early 1950’s. Speaking of Memorial Gymnasium, the venue can hold at least 14,000 fans in capacity. The Commodores basketball venue is about a 5-10 minute drive from Downtown Nashville (home of the NFL’s Titans, NHL’s Predators & Triple-A Baseball’s Sounds). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus very close to FirstBank Stadium (football) and Charles Hawkins Field (baseball).
The arena was constructed in honor of the university’s alumni who sacrificed their lives in World War II. Despite the venue’s long shelf life, the building underwent renovations in 2002 that saw a Hall of Champions as well as new offices. For men’s basketball, the Commodores last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently participated in the tournament in 2014. The men’s program took part in the March Madness five times since 2010, while the women’s team made five such appearances during that span.
