The History of the Dawgs Basketball at Stegeman Coliseum
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Georgia Bulldogs are ready for tip-off! The men in red and black have been playing at Stegeman Coliseum since the mid 1960’s. Speaking of Stegeman Coliseum, the venue can hold at least 10,000 fans in capacity. The Dawgs basketball venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from Atlanta (home of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, NFL’s Falcons, NBA’s Hawks & MLB’s Braves). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus close to Foley Field (home of the university’s baseball program).
The arena was named in honor of Herman Stegeman, who was the head coach for the men’s basketball squad from 1919 until 1931. In fact, Stegeman Coliseum underwent major renovations in 2017 that saw new seats and a jumbotron. For men’s basketball, the Dawgs last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2015. Meanwhile, the Lady Bulldogs recently advanced to the Elite 8 in 2013. The men’s program took part in the March Madness only twice since 2010, while the women’s team made nine such appearances during that span.
