The History of the Gators Basketball at Exactech Arena at Stephen C. O’Connell Center
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Florida Gators are ready for tip-off! The men in blue and orange have been playing at Stephen C. O’Connell Center since the early 1980’s. Speaking of Stephen C. O’Connell Center, the venue can hold at least 10,000 fans in capacity. The Gators basketball venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from Jacksonville (home of the NFL’s Jaguars & Triple-A Baseball’s Jumbo Shrimp). The basketball building is also located on the school’s campus adjacent to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (football).
The arena was named in honor of former university president and alumni Stephen C. O’Connel (1967-1973). In addition, the venue was previously known as the O’Connell Center before becoming Exactech Arena at Stephen C. O’Connell Center in 2016. For men’s basketball, the Gators last won a national title in 2007. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2014. The men’s program took part in the March Madness nine times since 2010, while the women’s team only made four such appearances during that span.
