The History of the UAB Blazers Football at Protective Stadium
With the College Football Season around the corner, the UAB Blazers are ready for kick-off! The men in green and gold have been playing at Protective Stadium since 2021. Speaking of Protective Stadium, the venue can hold at least 45,000 fans in attendance. The team’s football venue is about a 5-10 minute drive from the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) campus. Protective Stadium is also about a 10-minute drive from Regions Field (home of Minor League Baseball’s Birmingham Barons).
Protective Stadium’s Success for UAB and Birmingham
The venue hosts the annual Birmingham Bowl in December and features the matchup of C-USA vs. ACC/SEC. The men in green and gold won two C-USA championships in 2018 and 2020. In fact, the Blazers went to four bowl games with their only win so far in the 2018 Boca Raton Bowl vs. Northern Illinois. UAB previously played home games at Legion Field for the past thirty years.
