Twins Send Jose Berrios to Blue Jays in 3-Player Deal
Jose Berrios, 2-Time All-Star, Traded to Blue Jays in 3-Player Deal
Not long before 2021 MLB Trade Deadline (Friday, July 30) expired, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star pitcher. The Athletic MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal first reported that the Minnesota Twins have traded Starting RHP Jose Berrios to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Twins will be receiving the following in return from Toronto: Starting RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (U.S. Olympian for 2020 Tokyo) and INF Austin Martin (former Top-5 Pick).
Why Did the Twins Trade Jose Berrios?
Minnesota decided to trade the 2-Time All-Star due the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline. The Twins traded DH Nelson Cruz to the Rays and dealt Starting LHP J.A. Happ to the Cardinals. Also, Berrios will become eligible for arbitration following the 2021 season. The Twins are currently in last place in the AL Central Division with a 44-62 record. Therefore, Minnesota decided to trade Berrios to get something in return instead of losing him for nothing via free agency.
Why Did the Blue Jays Acquire Jose Berrios?
Toronto decided to trade for Berrios to bolster its starting rotation. Another reason for the acquisition is that the Blue Jays are fighting for a playoff spot. In fact, Toronto is trailing the 2nd AL Wild Card spot by 3.5 games to the Athletics and by 1.0 game to the Yankees in that race. With Jose Berrios now in the fold for the Blue Jays, the former Twins star will join the rotation consisting of the following: Hyun-jin Ryu, Robbie Ray, and Steven Matz.
What Was His Tenure with Minnesota Like?
Jose Berrios made his big league debut for the Twins in 2016. He was a two-time All-Star and guided the Twins to three playoff appearances. Berrios also led Minnesota to back-to-back AL Central Division titles in 2019 and 2020. For the 2021 season with Minnesota, he compiled an 8-5 record with a 3.31 E.R.A. and 133 Strikeouts.
