Who Are the Tri-City Americans? What League Do They Play in?

With the Minor League Hockey Season underway, the Tri-City Americans are ready to drop the puck! Tri-City is an independent affiliate of the Western Hockey League (WHL). In fact, the WHL is one of the three leagues in the Canadian Hockey League along with the Quebec Major Junior League and the Ontario Hockey League. The Tri-City franchise (which is named after the three cities: Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco) has been playing in the WHL since 1988. The Americans played in the 2010 Ed Chynoweth Cup Finals, but lost to the Calgary Hitmen in five games. In addition, they played in the Western Conference Finals four times in their history (2008, 2010, 2012, 2018). Since 2010, Tri-City has reached the WHL Playoffs nine times.

Where do the Tri-City Americans Play their Home Games? Who is the Main Mascot?

The Americans have been playing their home games at Toyota Center since 1988. Speaking of Toyota Center (not to be confused with the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets), the 5,500-capacity arena is about a 15-minute drive from Downtown Kennewick. The venue is also about a 2.0-hour drive from Spokane (home of the WHL’s Chiefs and Minor League Baseball’s Indians). Toyota Center was formerly known as Tri-Cities Coliseum (1988-2004) and Three Rivers Coliseum (2004-2005). The team’s main mascot is Winger the Eagle.
