Who Are the Texas Stars/Austin Spurs? What Leagues Do They Play in?

With the Minor League Hockey/Basketball Seasons underway, the Texas Stars and Austin Spurs are ready for action! Texas is an AHL affiliate of the Dallas Stars. In addition, they play in the Central Division for the Western Conference. Texas has been an affiliate for the Dallas Stars since 2010. The franchise was previously known as the Iowa Stars/Chops (Des Moines: 2005-2009) until their relocation to the Lone Star State. The Stars won the 2014 Calder Cup championship along with the Finals appearances in 2010 and 2018. Meanwhile, the Austin Spurs are an NBA G-League affiliate of the San Antonio Spurs. In fact, they have been a farm club for the Spurs since 2007. The team was previously known as the Austin Toros from 2005 until 2014. The Austin club won two NBA D/G League titles in 2012 and 2018.

The Stars have been playing at H-E-B Center since the 2009, while the Spurs have been playing there since 2010. Speaking of H-E-B Center, the 6,500-capacity arena is about a 30-minute drive from Austin, TX (home of the Texas Longhorns). The venue is also about a 10-15 minute drive from Round Rock, TX (home of Minor League Baseball’s Round Rock Express). The Stars’ official mascot is Ringo the Ringtail Cat, while the Spurs’ mascot is Da Bull the Brown Bull.
