The History of New York Yankees Spring Training in Tampa
With the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season underway, the New York Yankees are ready to play ball! The Bronx Bombers have been training at Steinbrenner Field since 1996. Speaking of Steinbrenner Field, the venue is also the home of the Tampa Tarpons of the Florida State League-Single A (formerly Low-A). The Yankees have been calling Tampa their Spring Training home since 1996 after playing in Fort Lauderdale for the previous 33 years. Steinbrenner Field is named after the late Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who owned the team from the 1970’s until his passing in 2010.
Steinbrenner Field is a 25-30 minute drive from Baycare Ballpark, the Spring Training home of the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater. Since the Yankees began Spring Training in 1996, the team won five MLB championships as well as seven American League pennants. New York recently won a World Series title in 2009 by defeating the Phillies in six games. Since 2017, the Yankees have played in three AL Championship Series and Aaron judge won the AL MVP in 2022.
