The History of South Carolina Football at Williams-Brice Stadium
With the College Football Season around the corner, the South Carolina Gamecocks are ready for kick-off! The men in Garnet and Black have been playing at Williams-Brice Stadium since the mid-1930’s. Speaking of Williams-Brice Stadium, the venue can hold at least 80,000 fans in attendance. The team’s football venue is about a 2.0-hour drive from Charleston (home of Minor League Baseball’s RiverDogs). The venue is also located on the University of South Carolina campus. The school’s football stadium was named after former player Thomas Hardin Brice and his wife, Martha Williams Brice. The couple donated funds to the renovation efforts for the stadium back in the 1970’s.
Since its opening, the Gamecocks football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Steve Spurrier (head coach), DE Jadeveon Clowney, RB George Rogers (Heisman Winner), RB Marcus Lattimore, Lou Holtz (head coach), and many more! The men in Garnet and Black last won a Conference Championship in 1967. Recently, the Gamecocks played in the SEC Championship Game in 2010.
