The History of SMU Mustangs Football at Gerald J. Ford Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the SMU Mustangs are ready for kick-off! The men in Red and Blue have been playing at Gerald J. Ford Stadium since the early-2000’s. Speaking of Gerald J. Ford Stadium, the venue can hold at least 30,000 fans in attendance. The Mustangs’ football venue is about a 10-15 minute drive from Downtown Dallas (home of the NHL’s Stars and NBA’s Mavericks). Gerald J. Stadium is also located on the Southern Methodist University campus. The school’s football stadium was named after local businessman Gerard J. Ford (who donated funds for the football venue along with other facilities).

Since its opening, the Mustangs football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: June Jones (head coach), HB Doak Walker (Heisman Winner), RB Eric Dickerson, Sonny Dykes (head coach), and many more! The men in Red and Blue last won a National Championship during the 1982 season. Recently, the Mustangs played in the Conference Championship Game in 2010 (lost to UCF). Since 2009, the football program has played in six bowl games.
