Who Are the San Antonio Missions? What League Do They Play in?
With the Minor League Baseball Season (MiLB) underway, the San Antonio Missions (based in San Antonio, Texas) are ready to play ball! The Missions are a Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. In addition, they play in the South Division for the Double-A Central League. The Missions have been an affiliate for the Padres since 2021. Hold on, this isn’t the team’s first rodeo with the San Diego organization. Prior to its current partnership with San Diego, San Antonio was a Triple-A affiliate for the Milwaukee Brewers (2019-2020). However, the MLB’s reorganization of its farm system in late 2020 forced the Missions to return to its partnership with the Padres as a Double-A franchise. San Antonio also served as a Double-A team for San Diego from 2007 until 2018.
The Missions were formerly known as the Colorado Sky Sox (1988-2018) before relocating to San Antonio in 2019. Meanwhile, the Double-A version of the Missions relocated to Amarillo, Texas to become the Sod Poodles in 2019.
Where do the Missions Play their Home Games? Who is the Official Mascot?
The Missions have been playing their home games at Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium since 1994. Speaking of Nelson Wolff Municipal Stadium, the 9,000-capacity ballpark is located near Downtown San Antonio close to the U.S. 90 Highway. The ballpark is named after Nelson Wolff, a County Judge who was the Mayor for San Antonio during the 1990’s. The team’s official mascots are Ballapeno the Jalapeno and Henry the Puffy Taco.
