Anthony Mantha, Former Red Wings Star, Traded to Capitals in 3-Player Deal

Just hours before the NHL Trade Deadline was set to expire, it appeared that one lucky team received a star player. Pierre LeBrun (TSN) and Kevin Weekes (NHL Network) first reported that the Detroit Red Wings have traded RW Anthony Mantha to the Washington Capitals. Detroit will receive the following in return from Washington: RW Richard Panik, LW Jakub Vrana, 2021 1st round draft pick, and a 2022 2nd round selection.

Why Did the Red Wings Trade Anthony Mantha?

Detroit decided to trade Mantha because of the team’s rebuilding efforts. The Red Wings have not been to the playoffs since the 2015-2016 season. Meanwhile, the Capitals acquired Mantha to bolster the team’s offensive core along with Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, and T.J. Oshie. Most importantly, Mantha is seeking his first career appearance in the postseason.

What Was His Tenure with Detroit Like?

Anthony Mantha has spent his entire career with the Red Wings, dating back to the 2015-2016 season. In four of his six campaigns with Detroit, he has scored at least 15 goals per season. For the 2020-2021 season with the Red Wings, Mantha scored 11 goals along with 10 assists (21 points).
