The History of Real Salt Lake Soccer at Rio Tinto Stadium
With the MLS Soccer Season underway, the Real Salt Lake are ready for action! They have been playing at Rio Tinto Stadium (Sandy, UT) since 2008. Speaking of Rio Tinto Stadium, the venue hosted the 2009 MLS All-Star Game. The stadium is about a 15-20 minute drive from Downtown Salt Lake City (home of the NBA’s Utah Jazz). Rio Tinto Stadium is also about a 10-15 minute drive from Smith’s Ballpark (home of Triple-A Baseball’s Salt Lake Bees).
Since the Real Salt Lake became an MLS franchise in 2005, the team won a MLS Cup in 2009. In addition, they lost the 2013 MLS Cup Final vs. Sporting Kansas City. The Salt Lake franchise is one of two MLS teams that play in the Mountain Time Zone along with the Colorado Rapids.
