The History of Portland Timbers Soccer at Providence Park
With the MLS Soccer Season underway, the Portland Timbers are ready for action! The Timbers have been playing at Providence Park since their inception in 2011. Speaking of Providence Park, the venue was formerly the home of the Minor League Baseball’s Portland Beavers. The stadium is about a 5-10 minute drive from the Moda Center (home of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers). Providence Park is also about a 5-10 minute drive from Memorial Stadium (home of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks).
Since the Portland Timbers became an MLS franchise in 2011, the team won the MLS Cup in 2015. In addition, the Timbers reached the final round of the 2018 MLS Cup (Lost to Atlanta United FC). The Portland franchise is one of three MLS teams from the Pacific Northwest along with the Seattle Sounders FC and Vancouver Whitecaps.
