The History of Omaha Sports at Baxter Arena
With the College Hockey/Basketball Season around the corner, the Mavericks are ready to play! The men in red and black have been playing at Baxter Arena since 2015. Speaking of Baxter Arena, the venue can hold nearly 8,000 fans in capacity. The UNO Mavericks venue is about a 1.0-hour drive from Lincoln (home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers). The hockey building is also about a 5-7 minute drive from the school’s main campus. Mavericks Stadium is adjacent to Stinson Park, where college and local community events take place year-round.
The arena contains a community rink named in honor of Dick Holland, a local businessman who provided funding to the construction efforts. Also, the venue is one of the newest hockey stadiums in the country as well as in the Midwest. For men’s hockey, the Mavericks last advanced to the Frozen Four in 2015. Meanwhile, the men’s basketball squad recently played in the NCAA Tournament (level 3) in 2010. The men’s hockey program took part in the Frozen Four three times since 2010, while the basketball team played in two CBI or CIT Tournament appearances during that span.
