The History of Sooners Football at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium
With the College Football Season around the corner, the Oklahoma Sooners are ready for kick-off! The men in crimson and cream have been playing at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium (or GFOM Stadium) since the early 1920’s. Speaking of GFOM Stadium, the venue can hold at least 80,000 fans in attendance. The Sooners football venue is about a half-hour drive from Oklahoma City (home of the NBA’s Thunder and Triple-A Baseball’s OKC Dodgers). GFOM Stadium is also located on the University of Oklahoma campus. The football venue was named after former University’s Board of Directors Member Edward K. Gaylord (whose daughter and ex-The Oklahoman Newspaper’s CEO, Christy, donated funds to the stadium’s renovations plans back in the early 2000’s).
Since its opening, the Sooners football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Bob Stoops (head coach), QB Sam Bradford, RB Adrian Peterson, WR CeeDee Lamb, Lincoln Riley (head coach), QB Baker Mayfield, QB Jalen Hurts, DE Lee Roy Selmon, and many more! The men in crimson and cream last won a National Championship in 2000, their 4th such title since the 1970’s.
