The History of Northwestern Basketball at Welsh-Ryan Arena
With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Wildcats are ready for tip-off! The men in purple have been playing at Welsh-Ryan Arena since the early-1950’s. Speaking of Welsh-Ryan Arena, the venue can hold at least 7,000 fans in capacity. The Wildcats basketball venue is about a 0.5-hour drive from Chicago (home of the MLB’s Cubs/White Sox, NFL’s Bears, NHL’s Blackhawks, and NBA’s Bulls). The basketball building is also located adjacent to Ryan Field (football) and not far from the school’s campus.
The arena was named in honor of university donor and alumni Patrick Ryan and his wife’s parents’ last names (Welsh). In addition, the venue underwent renovations in 2018 that saw new new player rooms and restrooms. For men’s basketball, the Wildcats last reached the NCAA Tournament in 2017. Meanwhile, the women’s squad recently played in the NCAA tournament in 2021. The men’s program took part in four NIT appearances in the late 2000’s, while the women’s team made two March Madness appearances since the 2010’s.
