The History of NIU Football at Huskie Stadium
With the College Football Season underway, the Northern Illinois Huskies are ready for kick-off! The men in red and black have been playing at Huskie Stadium since the mid-1960’s. Speaking of Huskie Stadium, the venue can hold at least 24,000 fans in capacity. The NIU football venue is about a 1.0-hour drive from Chicago (home of the NFL’s Bears, NBA’s Bulls, NHL’s Blackhawks & MLB’s Cubs/White Sox). Huskie Stadium is also about a 1.0-hour drive from Rockford, IL (home of Minor League Hockey’s Rockford IceHogs). The football building is even located on the school’s campus adjacent to Ralph McKenzie Field (baseball).
The venue is actually named Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium in honor of former athletic director Robert J. Brigham (1968-1987). In recent years, the university unveiled plans to remodel the football stadium that includes additional seating and more concession stands. For the NIU Huskies program, the team won five MAC Conference championships since 2010. In addition, the Huskies played in eight MAC Championship games during that span. However, NIU has not won a bowl game since the 2011 GoDaddy.com Bowl vs. Arkansas State.
