Max Scherzer, 3-Time Cy Young Winner, Traded to Dodgers in 6-Player Deal

Just a day before the 2021 MLB Trade Deadline (Friday, July 30), it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star pitcher. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan first reported that the Washington Nationals have traded Starting RHP Max Scherzer and INF Trea Turner to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Nationals will be receiving the following in return from Los Angeles: C Keibert Ruiz, Starting RHP Josiah Gray, OF Donovan Casey, and Starting RHP Gerardo Carrillo.

Why Did the Nationals Trade Max Scherzer?

Washington decided to trade Scherzer due the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline. The Nationals traded OF Kyle Schwarber to the Red Sox and sent Relief RHP Daniel Hudson to the Padres. Also, the multi-Cy Young winner will hit the free agent market following the 2021 season. The Nationals are currently in 4th place in the NL East Division with a 47-55 record. Therefore, Washington decided to trade Scherzer and Trea Turner to get something in return instead of losing them for nothing via free agency.

Why Did the Dodgers Acquire Max Scherzer?

Los Angeles (NL) decided to trade for Scherzer to bolster its starting rotation. Scherzer would fill the void of RHP Trevor Bauer (out due to administrative leave), while Trea Turner would fill the void of SS Corey Seager (out due to hand injury). Another reason for the acquisition is that the Dodgers are looking to push for a division title against the 1st place San Francisco Giants. In fact, Los Angeles is leading the 1st NL Wild Card spot by 2.5 games over the San Diego Padres.

In addition, the defending World Series Champions are currently in 2nd place in the NL West Division with 3.0 games behind San Francisco. With Scherzer now in the fold for the Dodgers, the 3-Time Cy Young winner will join the rotation consisting of the following: RHP Clayton Kershaw (once he returns from elbow injury), RHP Walker Buehler, LHP David Price, and LHP Julio Urias.

What Was His Tenure with Washington Like?

Max Scherzer joined the Nationals in 2015 after spending the previous five seasons with the Detroit Tigers. He won two Cy Young awards (2016 & 2017) and made the All-Star team six times. Scherzer also guided Washington to three playoff appearances, including the 2019 World Series championship. He also threw multiple no-hitters in 2015: one against the pirates and the other vs. the Mets. For the 2021 season with the Nationals, he compiled an 8-4 record with a 2.76 E.R.A. and 147 strikeouts.
