The History of Marshall Football at Joan C. Edwards Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Marshall Thundering Herd are ready for kick-off! The men in Green have been playing at Joan C. Edwards Stadium since the early-1990’s. Speaking of Joan C. Edwards Stadium, the venue can hold at least 35,000 fans in attendance. The Thundering Herd’s football venue is about a 3.0-hour drive from Morgantown (home of the West Virginia Mountaineers). Joan C. Edwards Stadium is also located on the Marshall University campus (which is close to the Ohio/West Virginia state line). The school’s football stadium was named after local singer Joan C. Edwards (whose husband, James, was a major donor for Marshall).

Since its opening, the Thundering Herd football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Doc Holliday (head coach), WR Randy Moss, QB Chad Pennington, Charles Huff (head coach), and many more! The men in Green last won a National Championship during the 1996 season (I-AA Level). Recently, the Thundering Herd won a conference title in 2014. Since 2011, the football program has played in eight bowl games.
