Marlins Send Starling Marte to Athletics in 2-Player Deal
Starling Marte, Multi-Gold Glove Winner, Traded to Athletics in 2-Player Deal
Not long before 2021 MLB Trade Deadline (Friday, July 30) expired, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star outfielder. ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan reported that the Miami Marlins have traded OF Starling Marte and cash considerations to the Oakland Athletics. The Marlins will be receiving the following in return from Oakland: Starting LHP Jesus Luzardo.
Why Did the Marlins Trade Starling Marte?
Miami decided to trade the 2-Time Gold Glove winner due the team becoming sellers at the trade deadline. The Marlins traded OF Adam Duvall to the Braves and Relief RHP Yimi Garcia to the Astros. In addition, Marte will hit the free agent market following the 2021 season. The Marlins are currently in last place in the NL East Division with a 46-62 record. Therefore, Miami decided to trade Marte to get something in return instead of losing him for nothing via free agency.
Why Did the Athletics Acquire Starling Marte?
Oakland decided to trade for Marte to bolster its offensive core. Another reason for the acquisition is that the Athletics are looking to fight for a playoff spot in the American League standings. In fact, Oakland is leading the 2nd AL Wild Card spot by 2.0 games over the New York Yankees. With Starling Marte now in the fold for the Athletics, the former Marlins star will join the lineup consisting of the following: Matt Chapman, Jed Lowrie, and Matt Olson.
What Was His Tenure with Miami Like?
Starling Marte was traded to the Marlins as part of a 2020 deal that sent Starting LHP Caleb Smith to the Arizona Diamondbacks. Later that year, Marte guided Miami to its first playoff appearance since 2003. For the 2021 season with Miami, he compiled a 0.306 batting average with 7 home runs and 25 RBIs.
