The History of Louisville Football at Cardinal Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Louisville Cardinals are ready for kick-off! The men in Red and Black have been playing at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium since the late-1990’s. Speaking of L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium, the venue can hold at least 60,000 fans in attendance. The Louisville football venue is about a 1.5-hour drive from Lexington (home of the SEC’s Kentucky Wildcats). Cardinal Stadium is also located on the University of Louisville campus. The school’s football stadium is also about a 2.0-hour drive from Cincinnati (home of the Bearcats, NFL’s Bengals, and MLB’s Reds). The football venue was formerly known as Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, but the name was dropped in 2018 due to scandals involving Founder John Schnatter. Louisville’s venue was recently just named as Cardinal Stadium before changing to its current title in 2023.

Since its opening, the Cardinals football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Charlie Strong (head coach), QB Jamar Jackson (Heisman Winner), DE Elvis Dumervil, QB Johnny Unitas, Bobby Petrino (head coach), and many more! The men in Red and Black last won a Conference Championship in 2012 (as Big East). Since 2006, the Cardinals have played in three New Year’s Bowl Games (winning Sugar Bowl in 2012).
