Full Story on Walt Bell Being Fired as UMass Football Head Coach
With Walt Bell gone, now is the time for the UMass Minutemen to make a list of top candidates. In fact, the recognizable applicants could be qualified to become the team’s new head coach for the 2022 Season. UMass fired Bell after nearly three seasons following their loss vs. Rhode Island. Offensive Line Coach Alex Miller will coach the Minutemen on an interim basis. Bell compiled a 2-23 overall record in the independent league (no conference nor division). At the time of the firing announcement, the Minutemen were 1-8 overall during the 2021 season.
During his time in Massachusetts, Walt Bell was not able to lead the Minutemen to any bowl games. In fact, UMass has never been to a bowl game nor accomplished a winning season since they became an independent football program in 2016. The Minutemen previously played in the Mid-American (MAC) Conference. Prior to becoming the UMass head coach in 2019, Bell was the Offensive Coordinator for Arkansas State (2014-2015), Maryland (2016-2017), and Florida State (2018).
