The National Championship Game is Finally Here!

It’s that time of year where college football fans find out which one of the top-four teams will win the national title. The (1) Georgia Bulldogs rallied to defeat the (4) Ohio State Buckeyes 42-41 in the playoff semifinals. Meanwhile, the (3) TCU Horned Frogs pulled off an upset against the (4) Michigan Wolverines 51-45 in the postseason. With the stage finally set, it’s a matchup between two Heisman finalists: QB Stetson Bennett (UGA) and QB Max Duggan (TCU).

The 2023 National Championship Game will take place on Monday, January 9 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Will the Horned Frogs pull off another major upset, or will the Bulldogs repeat as national champions? Experts Who Picked TCU to Win National Championship

Nicole Auerbach (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: College Football Writer for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? Texas Christian keeps finding wild ways to win football games and could do the same against Georgia. Back in November, the Horned Frogs rallied from an 8-point deficit to beat the Baylor Bears 29-28. One month earlier, TCU came back from an 11-point deficit to stun the Kansas State Wildcats 38-28. Recently, the Horned Frogs stopped Michigan’s late rally attempts to hold off the Wolverines 51-45.

Michael Cohen (Fox Sports)

  • Job Description: College Sports Writer for Fox Sports
  • Why TCU? The Horned Frogs will prevail based on high-octane offense by Max Duggan and the team. In seven of the thirteen games played in 2022 (including playoffs), Texas Christian has scored at least 40 or more points in a game. In fact, their victory vs. Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl was only the 4th time this season where they scored more than 50 points in a contest.

Shehan Jeyarajah (CBS Sports)

  • Job Description: College Football Writer for CBS Sports
  • Why TCU? Texas Christian’s offense has the opportunity to take advantage of the Georgia team whose defense wasn’t the same (still good) as last year’s title run. Since the previous season’s outcome, the Bulldogs lost DE Trevon Walker to the NFL Draft (#1 pick for Jaguars), DT Jordan Davis (#13 pick for Eagles), and LB Quay Walker (#22 pick for Packers).

Edward Sutelan (Sporting News)

  • Job Description: College Sports Writer for Sporting News
  • Why TCU? The speedy Max Duggan, as well as the offensive powers of WR Taye Barber (5 touchdowns & 605 receiving yards) and WR Quentin Johnston (6 touchdowns & 1,066 receiving yards) will pose a challenge for the Georgia defense.

Jayna Bardahl (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: College Football Editor for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? Max Duggan has been dynamite all season, despite their lone loss in the Big 12 Championship Game vs. Kansas State. Not only can the Heisman finalist throw meaningful yards, but he can also make running plays to get first downs. For 2022 (including playoffs), Duggan threw over 3,500 yards & 30 touchdowns and ran over 450 yards and rushed for six scores.

Sam Khan Jr. (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: College Football Senior Writer for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? If Horned Frogs RB Kendre Miller returns from injury and plays in the National Championship Game, then he could become the difference maker for Texas Christian. Miller hurt his knee during the team’s Fiesta Bowl win vs. Michigan. The running back has been stellar in 2022 and he ran for nearly 1,400 yards with 17 touchdowns (including playoffs).

Austin Meek (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: University of Michigan Sports Writer for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? Do not underestimate the fact that Georgia is a 13.0-point favorite to win the title game. In the Horned Frogs’ recent win in the Fiesta Bowl, they defeated the really good Wolverines team despite being an 8.0-point underdog. Back in November, TCU defeated the Texas Longhorns even though the men in purple were favored to lose by 7.5 points. One month earlier, the Horned Frogs managed to beat the Oklahoma Sooners despite being considered as 5.5-point underdog.

Max Olson (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: College Sports Senior Writer for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? Max Duggan, the Heisman Finalist, is having a career year in 2022. In the regular season, the TCU QB threw for 30 touchdowns and 3,321 passing yards. His hot trend continued during the College Football Playoff Semifinals, where he threw for 225 yards in addition to two touchdowns.

Chris Vannini (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: College Sports Senior Writer for The Athletic
  • Why TCU? The Horned Frogs will take advantage of the Bulldogs’ imperfections from the 2022 season. Even though Georgia has one of the best defenses in the sport, they were ranked 44th in rush yards per game (201.9) and 28th in pass yards per game (293.0). Meanwhile, Texas Christian has a better running game than the Dawgs as the men in purple rushed for 204.5 yards per game (39th ranked).

Experts Who Picked Georgia to Win National Championship

Scooby Axson (USA Today)

  • Job Description: Enterprise Writer for USA Today
  • Why Georgia? The Dawgs have returning stars from last year’s national title run. Among those players are QB Stetson Bennett, TE Brock Bowers, RB Kenny McIntosh, and K Jack Podlesny. Also, Georgia has not lost a football game since the 2021 SEC Championship vs. Alabama.

RJ Young (Fox Sports)

  • Job Description: College Football Analyst for Fox Sports
  • Why Georgia? The Bulldogs’ experience in the playoff, and TCU’s lack of, will be written on paper for UGA’s potential dynasty bid. Plus, Stetson Bennett is having a career year with 3,425 passing yards and 263.5 pass yards per game.

Jack Crosby (CBS Sports)

  • Job Description: College Football Editor for CBS Sports
  • Why Georgia? UGA was meant to be in the 2023 National Championship Game based on the fact that they were the top preseason pick to win it all. Also, the Dawgs were pretty much unanimously favored to dominate their SEC conference in 2022.

Bill Bender (Sporting News)

  • Job Description: National Writer for Sporting News
  • Why Georgia? Despite Max Duggan’s best efforts for TCU, Georgia’s high-flying offense will be too much to overcome for the Horned Frogs. For example, RB Kendall Milton is having the best season of his collegiate career with 559 rush yards and 7 touchdowns (including playoffs). If TCU RB Kendre Miller doesn’t play, then it could seal the deal for Georgia’s attempts to become the first repeat champion since Alabama (2011-2012).

Andy Bitter (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: Staff Writer for The Athletic
  • Why Georgia? Even though Texas Christian defeated Michigan in the Semifinals, they will be facing a different beast when they play vs. Georgia. Unlike the Wolverines, the Bulldogs have experience in playing in the National Title Game. In fact, UGA is playing in its 3rd National Championship since the 2010’s and compiled a 1-1 record in those games. Since the new postseason format began in 2014, the Dawgs are 4-1 all-time in the playoff games entering their matchup vs. TCU.

Jace Evans (USA Today)

  • Job Description: Digital Producer for USA Today
  • Why Georgia? The Bulldogs have players who have played in meaningful games in the past. Specifically, UGA is tied along with Alabama for most national title game appearances (2) and college postseason games (4) since the 2020’s.

Laken Litman (Fox Sports)

  • Job Description: College Sports Analyst for Fox Sports
  • Why Georgia? Since the Dawgs finished in the top 10 for best defenses in the sport for the regular season, they have the potential to solve Max Duggan and TCU’s running plays. In 2022, the Athens-based program gave up 14.79 points per game entering the postseason.

Ben Kercheval (CBS Sports)

  • Job Description: College Football Writer for CBS Sports
  • Why Georgia? The Bulldogs have a reputation of finding numerous ways to win football games. They have either won in close battles, or claimed victories in blowout fashion. Regardless of the box score, UGA will always find a way to win a game (especially in the 2023 National Championship Game).

Matt Brown (The Athletic)

  • Job Description: Senior Editor for The Athletic
  • Why Georgia? The defending champions have been playing like a superteam during the 2022 campaign. In fact, they have the formula to succeed in the National Championship Game on both offense and defense sides. Aside from QB Stetson Bennett, the Dawgs have five players that have scored five or more touchdowns throughout the season: RB Kenny McIntosh, TE Brock Bowers, RB Daijun Edwards, RB Kenny Milton, and WR Ladd McConkey. Meanwhile, Georgia has six players that have compiled at least 30 solo tackles for the yearL DB Malaki Starks, DB Kelee Ringo, DB Christopher Smith, LB Smael Mondon Jr., DB Javon Bullard, LB Jamon Dumas-Johnson.
