Full Story on Babers Being Fired as SU Orange Head Coach

With Dino Babers gone, now is the time for the Orange to interview top candidates. In fact, the recognizable applicants could be qualified to become the team’s new head coach for the 2024 season. Syracuse decided to fire Babers after eight seasons under the helm. At the time of the dismissal, the football program was 5-6 for the season and 1-6 in ACC conference play. Tight Ends Coach Nunzio Campanile will guide the team on an interim basis. SU was coming off a road loss against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Saturday. 

Dino Babers’s Career with the Syracuse Orange

The former coach led the club to a 10-win season in 2018, where the 10-3 Orange won the Camping World® Bowl. Unfortunately, Syracuse could not capture that same magic from that year because the school failed to win more than seven games a season for the next five years. The Orange has not been to a bowl game since the 2022 Pinstripe Bowl. In fact, the program has not finished in the Associated Press Top 25 standings since 2018 at #15. SU has not reached a college bowl berth in consecutive seasons since 2012-2013. 

Before coming to Central New York in 2016, Babers held the same role for Bowling Green (2014-2015) and Eastern Illinois (2012-2013). He also led the Falcons to the 2014 MAC Championship Game (lost vs. Northern Illinois) and a Camellia Bowl victory. Babers also served as a wide receivers coach for Baylor from 2008 until 2011.
