The History of Detroit Tigers Spring Training in Lakeland

When the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season comes, the Detroit Tigers are ready to play ball! The Tigers have been training at Joker Marchant Stadium since 1966. Speaking of Joker Marchant Stadium, the venue is also the home of the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the Florida State League-Single A. Since the Tigers came to the stadium in 1966, the team won two World Series championships in 1968 and 1984. Since the year 2000, Detroit has won the American League Pennant twice in 2006 and 2012. The venue is named after Joker Marchant, who was a former parks and recreation director for the city of Lakeland. There’s even a statue of Marchant shaking hands with another Lakeland local George Jenkins (located to the right of the home plate entrance).
