Sam Darnold Traded to Carolina Panthers in Multi-Pick Deal
Just nearly a week before Super Bowl LV kicks off, it appears that one lucky team will be getting a star quarterback. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported that the New York Jets have traded QB Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers. Schefter also said that New York will receive the following in return: a 6th round selection for the upcoming 2021 draft, a 2022 2nd round pick, and a 2022 4th round selection.
Why Did the Jets Trade Sam Darnold?
New York decided to trade Darnold in order to go into a new direction at the quarterback position. The Jets will select the #2 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft in Cleveland, Ohio. New York could draft a new quarterback like Justin Fields, Mac Jones, or Zach Wilson. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers acquired the former USC product in order to contend in the NFC South Division. In fact, Carolina is allowing QB Teddy Bridgewater to seek a trade with interested teams.
What Was Darnold’s Tenure with New York Like?
Sam Darnold was the #3 overall pick by the Jets (out of USC) in the 2018 Draft. However, New York currently has the NFL’s longest active playoff drought. The Jets have not been to the playoffs since the AFC Championship Game in early 2011. For his 2020 season with the Jets, Darnold threw 2,208 yards with 9 touchdowns and a 59.6 completion percentage.
