Who Are the Iowa Wild/Iowa Wolves? What Leagues Do They Play in?

With the Minor League Hockey/Basketball Seasons underway, the Iowa Wild and Iowa Wolves are ready for action! Iowa is an AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild. In addition, they play in the Central Division for the Western Conference. Iowa has been an affiliate for the Minnesota Wild since 2001. The franchise was previously known as the Houston Aeros (Texas: 1994-2013) until their relocation to the Midwest. The Wild only reached the Calder Cup Playoffs once in 2019. Meanwhile, the Iowa Wolves are an NBA G-League affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In fact, they have been a farm club for the Timberwolves since 2017. The team was previously known as the Iowa Energy from 2007 until 2017. The Iowa club won the NBA D-League Championship in 2011.

The Wolves have been playing at Wells Fargo Arena since the 2007, while the Wild have been playing there since 2013. Speaking of Wells Fargo Arena, the 15,000-capacity arena is located in Downtown Des Moines (home of Triple-A Baseball’s Cubs). The venue is also about a 2.0-hour drive from Iowa City (home of the Hawkeyes). The Wild’s main mascot is Crash the Lion Cub, while the Wolves’ mascot is Alpha the Wolf.
