The History of Hawkeyes Football at Kinnick Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Hawkeyes are ready for kick-off! The men in Black and Gold have been playing at Kinnick Stadium since the late-1920’s. Speaking of Kinnick Stadium, the venue can hold nearly 70,000 fans in attendance. The Hawkeyes football venue is about a 30-minute drive from Cedar Rapids (home of the High-A Baseball’s Cedar Rapids Kernels). Kinnick Stadium is also located on the University of Iowa campus. The school’s football stadium was named after Hawkeyes player Nile Kinnick (a Heisman Trophy winner who served for the military during WWII).

Since its opening, the Hawkeyes football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Kirk Ferentz (head coach), QB Ricky Stanzi, RB Shonn Greene, LB Chad Greenway, HB Nile Kinnick, Hayden Fry (head coach), DE A.J. Epenesa, and many more! The men in Black and Gold last won a National Championship in 1960. Recently, the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten Conference title in 2004.
