The History of Fighting Illini Football at Memorial Stadium

With the College Football Season around the corner, the Illinois Fighting Illini are ready for kick-off! The men in Orange and Navy Blue have been playing at Memorial Stadium since the mid-1920’s. Speaking of Memorial Stadium, the venue can hold at least 60,000 fans in attendance. The Fighting Illini’s football venue is about a 2.0-hour drive from Chicago (home of MLB’s Cubs/White Sox, NHL’s Blackhawks, NBA’s Bulls, and NFL’s Bears). Memorial Stadium is also located on the University of Illinois campus. The school’s football stadium is a memorial to the local Illinois soldiers who fought for the U.S. in the wars that took place in the 1900’s.

Since its opening, the Fighting Illini football venue has witnessed some of the greatest college football players and coaches in history. Those players are the following: Ron Zook (head coach), LB Dana Howard, CB Vontae Davis, QB Tony Eason, Ron Turner (head coach), and many more! The men in Orange and Navy Blue last won the National Championship in 1951 (shared with Georgia Tech). Recently, the Fighting Illini won the Big Ten Conference title in 2001. However, Illinois has only played in four bowl games since the 2010 season.
