Jonas Valanciunas, Grizzlies Star, Traded to Pelicans in Major Trade

Just days before the 2021 NBA Draft is set to begin, it appears that one lucky team received a star center. ESPN NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported that the Memphis Grizzlies have traded C Jonas Valanciunas and the #17  & #51 overall draft picks to the New Orleans Pelicans. The Grizzlies will receive the following in return from New Orleans: PG Eric Bledsoe, C Steven Adams, the #10 & #40 overall picks in the 2021 Draft, and the 2022 1st round selection.

Why Did the Grizzlies Trade Jonas Valanciunas?

Memphis decided to trade the center due to his pending free agency. Valanciunas will hit the market following the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season. Also, the Pelicans are adding new pieces to build around Zion Williamson. For instance, New Orleans fired head coach Stan van Gundy after one season and replaced him with ex-Suns assistant Willie Green. With Valanciunas in the fold for the Pelicans, he will join forces with New Orleans’ top players like Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.

What Was His Tenure with Memphis Like?

Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Grizzlies as part of the deal that sent C Marc Gasol to the Raptors during the 2018-2019 season. He guided Memphis to one playoff appearance in 2021. For the 2020-2021 season with the Grizzlies, he scored 17.1 points per game along with 12.5 rebounds per game and 1.8 assists per game.
