The History of Golden Gophers Basketball at Williams Arena

With the College Basketball Season around the corner, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are ready for tip-off! The men in maroon and gold have been playing at Williams since the late 1920’s. Speaking of Williams Arena, the venue can hold at least 14,000 fans in capacity. The Golden Gophers basketball venue is very close to Downtown Minneapolis (home of the MLB’s Twins, NBA’s Timberwolves, WNBA’s Lynx, and NFL’s Vikings). Williams Arena is also located on the school’s campus. The school’s football stadium was named after former Minnesota Football Head Coach Henry L. Williams (who coached the program for at least 20 years). The men in maroon and gold last reached the Elite 8 in 1990. In fact, the Golden Gophers have played in the Men’s March Madness four times since 2010. Meanwhile, the women’s basketball squad advanced to the Final Four in 2004.
