The RailCats are an Independent Baseball Team for the American Association of Professional Baseball (Partner of the MLB). In addition, Gary SouthShore plays in the East Division for the League. The RailCats, which were named after Gary’s long connection with the South Shore Line Train industry, have no prior Minor League affiliation with any MLB club. The team was formerly a traveling club for the 2002 independent baseball season due to their current stadium not completed in time for the season’s beginning. Pop Superstar Michael Jackson was born and raised in Gary, so that’s one of the reasons the northern Indiana city is one of the famous cities in the Midwest.

The RailCats have been playing their home games at U.S. Steel Yard since the late summer of 2002. Speaking of U.S. Steel Yard, the 6,000-capacity ballpark is about a 45-minute drive from Chicago (home of the MLB’s Cubs/White Sox, NHL’s Blackhawks, NBA’s Bulls, and NFL’s Bears). In fact, the stadium is also about a 2.5-hour drive from Fort Wayne, IN (home of Minor League Baseball’s Fort Wayne TinCaps, ECHL Hockey’s Fort Wayne Komets, and NBA G-League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants). The RailCats are one of the couple independent baseball teams that play close to the Chicago area along with the Chicago Dogs and Kane County Cougars. The team’s official mascot is Rusty the RailCat.
