Jakub Voracek, former Flyers All-Star, Traded to Blue Jackets in Major Trade

Just days before the NHL Free Agency Period (Wednesday, July 28) is set to begin, it appears that one lucky team received a star player. ESPN reported that the Philadelphia Flyers have traded RW Jakub Voracek to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Philadelphia will receive the following in return: RW Cam Atkinson. This is the second trade that the Blue Jackets made over the past couple days as the team dealt D Seth Jones to the Chicago Blackhawks. Voracek will heading to his second stint with Columbus as he was drafted by the club to begin his career.

Why Did the Flyers Trade Jakub Voracek?

Philadelphia decided to trade the former All-Star due to the possibility of clearing some space for the team’s salary cap. Meanwhile, the Blue Jackets are likely going into a rebuilding phase as the team parted ways with Seth Jones and head coach John Tortorella. Columbus also lost G Sergei Bobrovsky and C Pierre-Luc Dubois to either trades or free agent signings with other teams. Voracek will now join forces with Boone Jenner, Max Domi, Patrik Laine, and G Joonas Korpisalo. Jakub Voracek will enter free agency in 2024, while Cam Atkinson will hit the market in 2025. With that in mind, it appears that free agency was not a factor to the trade becoming a reality.

What Was His Tenure with Philadelphia Like?

Jakub Voracek has spent the last 10 years with the Flyers dating back to the 2011-2012 season. He was traded to Philadelphia as part of the Jeff Carter deal. Voracek guided the Flyers to five postseason appearances and became an All-Star in 2015. For the 2020-2021 season with the Flyers, he scored 9 goals along with 34 assists (43 points).
