In fact, the OHL is one of the three leagues in the Canadian Hockey League along with the Quebec Major Junior League and the Western Hockey League. The Firebirds have been playing in the OHL since 2015. The franchise was formerly known as the Plymouth Whalers (Michigan: 1997-2015) until their relocation to Flint. Since the Firebirds era began, the team only reached the OHL Playoffs once in 2017.

The Firebirds have been playing their home games at Dort Financial Center since 2015. Speaking of Dort Financial Center, the 4,000-capacity arena is a 10-minute drive from Downtown Flint. Dort Financial Center was previously known as the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center (2015-2020) and Perani Arena (2003-2015). The team’s main mascot is Hot Wing the Orange Firebird.
