The History of Baltimore Orioles Spring Training in Sarasota

When the Spring Training Grapefruit League Season comes, the Baltimore Orioles are ready to play ball! The Orioles have been training at Ed Smith Stadium since 2010. Ed Smith Stadium was previously the spring training home for the Chicago White Sox (1989-1997) and Cincinnati Reds (1998-2009). Since the Orioles came to the stadium in 2010, the team made four playoff appearances as well as three AL East Division titles and a 2014 ALCS appearance. In 2023, Baltimore broke its 7-year playoff drought by winning the AL East Division and the #1 seed in the American league.

The Orioles have trained in Sarasota before from 1989 to 1991 before playing spring ball in St. Petersburg and then Fort Lauderdale. The venue is named after Ed Smith, who founded the Sarasota Sports Committee after he spent time being a member of the Chamber of Commerce. In fact, there is a plaque of Ed Smith on the right side wall located in the home plate entrance.
